Newport, Rhode
Island joins hands with First Night International
Newport, Rhode Island:
Newport Rhode Island is now one of the newest
affiliates of
First
Night International.
Executive Director of First Night Newport, Mr.
Charles Roberts comments, "Newport’s
Opening Night celebration was aptly named after
holding a contest to rename the event, due to
trademark issues from its conception some ten
years ago under the direction of the late John
Chatty. After working as the director and producer
of Opening Night Newport for the last five years,
I learned of the many benefits our community
would receive by becoming a First Night destination.
So with the help of donations from businesses
and residences from the entire community, it
became a reality for Newport. Westerly, Rhode
Island is currently the only other town in Rhode
Island to be chosen as a First Night destination,” adds
Roberts.
First Night Newport is Newport County’s
non-profit, family oriented, alcohol free Festival
of the Arts held in 20 locations in downtown
Newport on December 31st from
5 p.m. until 1 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.
Our mission is to provide an event that is accessible
and affordable to all families who choose to
experience the values gained by sharing a tradition
of celebrating together.
Our City's historic buildings are used as performance
venues to showcase a variety of high quality
innovative, and culturally diverse performances
by artists and artisans from Newport County,
the surrounding area and beyond. Our local businesses,
shops and restaurants offer special sales and
discounts to visitors wearing First Night buttons
during December and January. A portion of the
funds we receive from the sale of First Night
buttons is donated to the Boys and Girls Club.
Because of the generous support
of our sponsors, admission to all events is $7,
the price of a
First Night Button. For children five years old
and under, admittance to all events
is free. First Night Buttons can be purchased
starting on Thanks giving Day weekend at;
the Walrus & the Carpenter, 909 East Main
Road, Middletown , Signatures of Newport, 700

Nation Under A Groove" celebration was the
brainchild of Harry Towers and everyone involved
with the night wanted to celebrate in New York
City because it is the Dance Music Capital of the
World. Dance music is such a part of our everyday
life experience and the international community
is a great part of our global culture in the city.
On behalf of everyone involved we are delighted
that so many voices of dance music have come together
with the hottest international mix masters to celebrate
