Celebrating
20 years “in the mix” in 2004 and the hits keep coming!
Johnny
Rocks rose from working the door at a nightclub and spinning at
local parties with a stop over on college radio to one of the most
innovative DJ talents in the game, with Mix Master status on WKTU
103.5 FM (The Beat Of New York); and holds the record for the longest
running mix show in the country on Florida’s WAPE 95.1 FM

his mastery on and off the dance floor and he holds a Master’s
Degree.
Johnny Rocks celebrates over 20 years in the business in 2004
and he currently rocks the Base Cabinets to frenzied dance floors
as a celebrity club DJ with over 75,000 vinyl records in his personal

Johnny Rocks
Johnny Rocks, born in Queens, New York resides in Manhattan and
is a celebrity club DJ, radio Mix Master, and an in-demand Remixer.
Also, a musician (trumpet, drum and piano), Johnny comes from a
musical family… his father was a musician in a big band and
his mother was a vocalist. Johnny Rocks worked his way up in nightclubs,
beginning first as a door man, then a light man for a DJ before
he got his shot in the DJ booth stopping along the way as a VJ,
(during the infancy of the New York Video in-club play as a pre-show),
at Fudgies in Westchester. Johnny started as a DJ spinning parties
in the late 70’s in New York and soon landed a job on college
radio in Lynchburg, Virginia; but it was in 1984 that Johnny Rocks
began his professional career when he got his first shot to mix
vinyl records to hundreds of hustle and freestyle dancers in nightclubs
having gone into Guest spots at notable mainstays such as New York’s
Palladium, The Limelight, Moonshadow, to name a few.

In 1986 Johnny left New York to go back to school to get his masters
degree at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. It
was here that the innovator, Johnny Rocks had an idea for a mix
show
in which Jacksonville, Top 40 radio at the time couldn’t
imagine would work! Always persistent with a undying trait of patience… it
was in 1988 when then program director of WAPE Power 95 Jeff McCartney
(now of H I T S Magazine) gave Johnny a shot and the stage was
set for the first mix show, it was called, “The Saturday
Night Power Mix”. Johnny’s career in radio mix show
was now underway. Johnny Rocks currently programs two of the highest
rated radio mix-shows in Jacksonville on WAPE 95.1 FM, (Jacksonville’s
#1 Hit Music Station) on Saturday nights from 10 pm –2am
during his #1 Arbitron rated show,” The Saturday Night Dance
Factory” and “Happy Traxx” which features the
very best of today’s dance music, yesterday’s classics
and underground domestic and import House releases.
Concurrently in New York, in the #1 market…in 1997 Johnny
Rocks won a spot mixing for WKTU 103.5 FM (The Beat of New York)
when then Program Director Frankie Blue and current KTU Program
Director Jeff Z tagged him for the 20 year reunion of the movie
Saturday Night Fever, after which he was given a slot on Sunday’s
programming as he mixed during “The Sunday Morning Brunch
Mix”. Johnny went onto programming the ”Midday at Work
Classic Mix”, and The KTU Funhouse (Level 1) of the “Saturday
Night Dance Factory”, with Jellybean Benitez. Currently Johnny
Rocks can be heard mixing KTU Recurrents & Freshbeats on Saturdays
at 2 pm (tagged, KTU’s Feelgood Summer Mix). Furthermore,
the Johnny Rocks signature can be found during various times such
as KTU MIXMASTER Holiday weekend shows and during his guest spots
on the legendary, “Studio 54 Clubhouse” with Joe Causi,
to name a few.
Johnny’s credits include critically acclaimed and fan favorites
as he has remixed for major label and worldwide top selling artists
such as Madonna, Cher, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and has added
his flavor to teen R&B heartthrobs B2K as well as the dance
communities top selling artists. Johnny Rocks’ love for the
art of spinning keeps him in high demand in chic nightspots, on
the radio in the #1 market in the country on WKTU 103.5 FM and
the status of having the longest running mix show alive on WAPE
95.1 FM in Jacksonville, as well as in high demand remixing what
industry critics are calling “definitive remixes”.
Johnny Rocks doesn’t consider himself the hotshot Mix Master,
whom could claim this title by any standard and remains humble
and grounded as he does what he loves to do, but most of all…Johnny
Rocks is the first to share his knowledge and experience with up
and coming DJ’s…one popular DJ who spins in New York
City said it best recently…”I met Johnny Rocks once,
and I was talking about why I didn’t like this remixer, or
that remixer and Johnny Rocks said to me, “that’s the
wrong attitude, because… you can always learn something from
everyone. Everyone has something positive to offer, instead you
should identify the one thing that makes the other guy great and
learn from him!”…the young DJ learned his lesson and
has since gone on to enter into residence at some of the most popular
hotspots in New York City. Johnny Rocks, the Celebrity Club DJ,
Mix Master, Remixer to the hits and Producer describes himself
simply as …DJ / Remixer & Music Enthusiast. Now this
is why he has survived the test of time and is still rockin’ the
Base Cabinets as he inks his place in dance music history!
